These were the men who had fought in the Ashanti Campaign recently under the leadership of Sir Garnet Wolseley. The Campaign was successful and brought enhanced trade opportunities on the Gold Coast to Britain. On their return, all 1,600 troops were reviewed by the Queen in Windsor Great Park. Sir Garnet was awarded the KCB and the sum of £25,000. From Punch, or the London Charivari, April 4, 1874. |

Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha married his first cousin, Queen Victoria, in 1840. In 1857 he was given the title Prince Consort and became the Queens private advisor. He was interested in the arts, science and industry and planned the Great Exhibition of 1851. His death in 1861, from typhoid fever, was a crushing blow to Queen Victoria, who wore mourning dress for the remaining 40 years of her life. |
